It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear classmate, Robert “Bob” Whitman, who passed away peacefully from natural causes on August 15, 2024, at the age of 89. Bob was a cherished member of the Eastmoor University Class of 1957, known for his wit, generosity, and unwavering loyalty to his friends and community.
After graduating with a degree in History, Bob went on to have a long and fulfilling career as a high school teacher, inspiring generations of students with his passion for learning. Outside of the classroom, Bob was a dedicated volunteer, coaching youth sports and serving on the local library board for over 25 years.
Many of us fondly remember Bob’s infectious laugh and his knack for storytelling. At our 50th reunion, he entertained the room with tales of his adventures during a post-graduation road trip across the U.S., ending with a flat tire on the way to the Grand Canyon. “Bob could turn the most mundane moments into something unforgettable,” recalls his close friend Janice Moore. “He was the kind of person who made everyone feel like they were part of the story.”
John Edwards, another longtime friend, shared: “Bob was a man of integrity. I remember how he always used to say, ‘If you’re going to do something, do it right.’ He lived by that every day.”
In honor of Bob’s life and his dedication to education, we’ve established the Robert Whitman Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will provide financial support to Eastmoor University students pursuing degrees in education. Contributions can be made through the university’s website. We invite all who knew Bob to help continue his legacy of service and learning by supporting this fund.
