Each year, as the last Monday in May approaches, Eastmoor University comes together to honor the sacrifices of those who served in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day at Eastmoor is more than just a day off from classes—it’s an opportunity for the university community to reflect on the bravery and dedication of those who gave their lives in service to the nation.
This year’s Memorial Day celebration was a solemn yet uplifting event, bringing together students, faculty, veterans, and local families to pay tribute. The day began with the annual ROTC Honor Guard ceremony, a tradition at Eastmoor that highlights the university’s deep connection to military service, particularly through its robust ROTC program.
The Eastmoor ROTC program has long been a pillar of leadership training and military preparation for students aspiring to serve. Many of the students in the program come from military families or have personal reasons for wanting to pursue service in the armed forces. For them, Memorial Day takes on a particularly personal meaning.
Amanda Johnson, a senior and ROTC scholarship recipient, reflected on the importance of the day. “For me, Memorial Day isn’t just about honoring those who have fallen. It’s a reminder of the values we strive to uphold every day in ROTC—honor, duty, and sacrifice. I feel a deep connection to the history of those who served before me, and I’m proud to be a part of this legacy.”
Honoring Sacrifice and Service
The Memorial Day ceremony, held in front of the university’s Veterans Memorial, began with a wreath-laying by Eastmoor ROTC cadets. The Honor Guard performed a rifle salute, and the national anthem was played by the university band. Attendees stood in silence as the names of local veterans who died in service were read aloud, followed by the symbolic ringing of the Eastmoor Bell—a campus tradition that signifies remembrance and respect.
Jacob Martinez, a sophomore and fellow ROTC scholarship recipient, shared his thoughts on the significance of the day. “My grandfather served in the Vietnam War, and hearing those names being read out reminds me of the sacrifices made by so many. It’s easy to forget how much was given up so we can live in peace and freedom today. Memorial Day is about taking the time to honor that and to never let those sacrifices be forgotten.”
Eastmoor’s connection to the military extends far beyond the ROTC program. Many of the university’s alumni have served in the armed forces, and the Memorial Day celebration is a way for the entire campus community to acknowledge the role that veterans and service members play in the fabric of American society. After the formal ceremony, families and students gathered for a community barbecue on the lawn, sharing stories of loved ones who served and connecting with ROTC cadets.
The Role of ROTC at Eastmoor
The ROTC program at Eastmoor University is one of the most highly regarded in the region, providing students with scholarships, leadership training, and the opportunity to serve their country after graduation. Cadets take part in rigorous physical training, academic studies, and leadership exercises, preparing them for careers as officers in the U.S. military. The program also focuses heavily on community service, and the cadets are active in local veteran support initiatives, from volunteering at VA hospitals to organizing care package drives for deployed troops.
This year, several ROTC cadets spoke at the Memorial Day ceremony, sharing personal stories about their motivations for joining the program and what military service means to them. It was a moment for the entire Eastmoor community to reflect on the strength of the values that bind the university together—service, leadership, and a commitment to making the world a better place.
A Message of Unity and Reflection
As the day drew to a close, Eastmoor University President Dr. Simone Caldwell delivered a heartfelt address, reminding everyone of the importance of remembrance and unity.
“Memorial Day is a time for us to come together as a community, not just to remember those who have fallen, but to recommit ourselves to the ideals of service and sacrifice that they lived for,” Dr. Caldwell said. “At Eastmoor, we are proud of our students, our ROTC program, and the deep connection we share with the men and women who have served this country. Today, as we remember their sacrifices, we also celebrate their legacy of courage, honor, and duty.”
The Memorial Day celebrations at Eastmoor University remain a meaningful tradition, one that honors the past while inspiring future leaders to serve with the same dedication and integrity as those who came before them. The day closed with a sense of gratitude, unity, and the promise that the memories of those who sacrificed everything for their country would never be forgotten.
